Volunteer Spotlight Award - December 2015
Donna Gambol was selected by a committee that reviews the votes from nominations received on Lift’s website nomination form submitted by members of the community. A summary of the nomination for Gambol reads as follows:
“The two most visible gateways to Greater Johnstown are brightened and more visible due to the energies of community volunteer, Donna Gambol. She almost singlehandedly maintained and oversaw the small park at the corner of Haynes and Bedford Streets, the most trafficked gateway into the city. She secured the funding, easement, design and permanent improvements to make the site a special place of repose and reflection. She has planted bulbs, flowers, and removed weeds and debris throughout the year. Donna revitalized the Rotary Club of Johnstown’s initiative to provide international flags for the park at the base of the Inclined Plane, overseeing the procurement, installation and semiannual presentation of new flags. Donna also chaired First Book Johnstown, securing brand new books for low-income children and oversaw the grants for that program: writing grant proposals to foundations, direct appeal letters to individual donors, and oversaw the out-flow grants to eligible programs in Greater Johnstown. Weekly she read with the children who reside at the Johnstown Christian Home and the children who attend the summer eating program at Christ Centered Community Church. She established two new Interact Clubs, (Greater Johnstown High School and Middle School) and worked to establish a Rotoract Club at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.”
